Chris Gustin, 3D Printed Tea Bowl, #1464,2014
HIfire RESolutions is an exhibition of sculpture by 5 mid-career artists (Kate Blacklock (curator), Jonathan Bonner, Chris Gustin, Tayo Heuser and Andrew Raftery) experimenting with the process of 3D ceramic printing as an extension of their studio practice. The artists vary in their primary medium, from drawings to etching to sculpture. They also vary in their knowledge of ceramic materials. What unites them for this exhibition is in fact how they contribute to a broad spectrum of aesthetic vision. In keeping with the theme of the NCECA conference, Lively Experiments, this exhibition is a collaboration between the artists, digital engineers and printing technicians at 3D Systems in Boston, who sponsored the printing. 3D ceramic printing is a developing technology, but clearly the wave of the future. There are things that can be produced by printing that could not be fabricated any other way.
Can artists use this process to expand their own range and will they, at the same time, show unforeseen potential in this budding technology?
